About Waist-to-Hip Ratio
The waist-to-hip ratio (WHR) is a simple measurement that compares the circumference of your waist to that of your hips. It's used as an indicator of health and the risk of developing serious health conditions.
How Waist-to-Hip Ratio Works
The ratio is calculated using the formula:
WHR = Waist Circumference ÷ Hip Circumference
Where:
- Waist Circumference is measured at the narrowest point between ribs and hips
- Hip Circumference is measured at the widest part of the buttocks
Health Risk Categories
Gender | Low Risk | Moderate Risk | High Risk |
---|---|---|---|
Men | Below 0.85 | 0.85 - 0.90 | Above 0.90 |
Women | Below 0.75 | 0.75 - 0.80 | Above 0.80 |
Body Shape Classification
- Apple shape - More weight around the waist (higher WHR)
- Pear shape - More weight around the hips (lower WHR)
Apple-shaped individuals tend to have higher health risks than pear-shaped individuals.
Health Implications
A higher WHR indicates more abdominal fat, which is associated with:
- Increased risk of heart disease
- Higher chance of developing type 2 diabetes
- Greater likelihood of high blood pressure
- Increased risk of certain cancers
Example Calculation
For a woman with 70 cm waist and 95 cm hips:
- WHR = 70 ÷ 95 = 0.74
- Category: Low Risk
- Body Shape: Pear
For a man with 90 cm waist and 95 cm hips:
- WHR = 90 ÷ 95 = 0.95
- Category: High Risk
- Body Shape: Apple
